(TRENTON) – Acting Governor Richard J. Codey announced today that approximately 1.1 million FAIR rebate checks for 2004 will begin arriving in New Jersey residents’ mailboxes today.

“Providing property tax relief to the residents of this State was one of our highest priorities in this year’s budget,” said Acting Governor Codey. “Even though I worked to pass a budget that cuts spending more than any other budget in State history, I fought hard so our senior and disabled homeowners and tenants can count on the same level of relief as last year.”

Eligible senior and disabled homeowners who filed their applications by June 1, as well as all eligible tenants, whether they are age 65 or disabled or not, can expect to receive their 2004 FAIR rebate checks this week.

“The FAIR program is part of a $14 billion commitment by Governor Codey in the State budget for property tax relief,” McCormac said.

Treasurer John E. McCormac noted that under the FAIR Rebate Program, approximately 410,000 homeowners who were 65 or older or disabled as of Dec. 31, 2004, will this week receive rebate checks ranging from $500 to $1,200, while about 54,000 senior or disabled tenants will receive rebates of $150 to $825. About 650,000 non-senior, non-disabled tenants will receive rebate checks of $75. Additional rebate checks will be mailed out as soon as possible for senior, disabled and tenant filers submitting applications between June 1 and Aug. 15.

FAIR rebate checks for eligible non-senior, non-disabled homeowners will be mailed in the fall. For information about the FAIR Rebate Program, residents may call 1-888-238-1233.

Homeowners who still have not filed their FAIR rebate applications can do so by phone (1-877-658-2972) or online at The automated telephone filing system and Internet filing application are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The filing deadline is Aug. 15, 2005.

Rebate checks are for property taxes paid in tax year 2004. The rebates are funded in the fiscal year 2005-06 budget.

Homeowners and tenants can check the status of their FAIR rebate check by calling 1-877-658-2972, or online at Rebate check information for homeowners who are under 65 and not disabled will not be available either online or by phone until the fall.
