 TRENTON – State
Treasurer Bradley I. Abelow today announced that New Jersey’s
State budget presentation has won the Distinguished Budget Presentation
Award for the 16th year in a row, from the Government Finance Officers
Association of the United States and Canada.
The
award went to the State of New Jersey for its FY 2007 budget. In
addition Treasury’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB),
as the individual agency responsible for the budget, has been honored
with a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation. The GFOA’s
Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national
awards program in governmental budgeting.
“This award exemplifies a longstanding standard of excellence
shown by OMB in its assembly, preparation and presentation of New Jersey’s
State budget, Treasurer Abelow said. “Under the able direction
of Charlene Holzbaur, OMB each year produces a budget that is a complete
and easily understandable guide to New Jersey’s fiscal balance
sheets and policy priorities.
“This award is public recognition and affirmation of the suburb
and professional job performed by OMB every day,” Treasurer Abelow
said.
According to the GFOA, this award is a significant achievement and
reflects the commitment of the State and particularly OMB to meeting
the highest principles of government budgeting.
In
order to receive the budget award, New Jersey had to satisfy nationally
recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation in making the spending
plan a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications
device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four
categories to receive the award.
