BOARD ELECTION INFORMATION


PERS BOARD ELECTION INFORMATION

The election for State and county Trustee positions for the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) is currently open.  Eligible PERS members may cast a ballot for the candidate of their choice through May 31, 2015, at 5 PM.
 
A few points of information that might be helpful:

  1. Ballots for voting for the positions of State and County representative to the PERS Board of Trustees were shipped on April 1, 2015. 
  2. PERS members who are eligible to vote will receive their ballots from the Certifying Officer at their employing location. 
  3. PERS members who were identified as active PERS members as of December 31, 2014 will receive a ballot at their place of employment.  Ballots should be distributed by April 14th.
  4. If a member doesn’t receive a ballot but thinks he or she should have:  Active PERS member who do not receive a ballot would usually be those who were on leave of absence at the end of 2014, or are just recently enrolled in the PERS. A member who did not receive a ballot must make a request to their Certifying Officer who will pass along the request to office of the Board Secretary.  The Certifying Officer is usually found in the HR or Payroll section.
  5. The closing date for the PERS Trustee election is May 31 at 5PM. All ballots cast, whether online, by phone, or by mail, must be received no later than May 31, 2015 at 5 PM.

TPAF BOARD ELECTION INFORMATION

N.J.A.C. 17:3-1.4, sets forth the procedure for the election of a member-trustee.

ELECTION RESULTS

Howard D. Lipoff, from Bergen County, registered with the TPAF Board Secretary by the filing deadline, February 1, 2014. Therefore, in accordance with N.J.A.C. 17:3-1.4, Howard Lipoff is deemed elected without ballot to represent Group A for a three-year term commencing on January 1, 2015.  Group A consists of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties.

TRUSTEE POSITION

The current election is to fill a trustee position from Group B, for a three-year term commencing on January 1, 2016.  Group B consists of Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties.

Names of those who wish to become a candidate for this position must be a resident of the State of New Jersey and must be employed in or retired from one of the counties listed above in Group B.  Written letters of interest for this position will be accepted by the Secretary of the TPAF Board no later than February 1, 2015

PFRS BOARD ELECTION INFORMATION

PFRS election packets were mailed by the vendor to the employing locations on or about May 29, 2015.  Active PFRS-Police members who have not received their election packet by June 12, 2015,may contract their certifying officer.  PFRS members may vote electronically by telephone or Internet or they may mail a paper ballot.  The last day to vote is July 24, 2015, 5:00 p.m. 

The candidates for Police trustee are:

  • James Troisi (Essex County)
  • Michael Kaniuk (Middlesex County)

PFRS BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Render determinations regarding Disability retirement cases.
  • Review appeals pertaining to the disallowance of pension benefits.
  • Adopt rules and regulations to provide for the payment of benefits and collection of monies as required by the statute.
  • Establish rules and regulation within the limitations of statutes and opinions of the Courts and the Attorney General, designed to prevent injustices and inequities that may arise in the operation of the Retirement System.
  • Resolve individual questions on the merits of each case in terms of statutes, opinions of the Attorney General, advice of the Actuary and cases cited by counsel as deliberated by the Courts.
  • View monthly and annual reports setting forth data such as assets and liabilities, income and disbursements and statistical summarization of membership as documented by the Actuary.
