Past NJWELL Events

The NJWELL Program’s presence at the NJEA Convention on November 5 and 6 in Atlantic City was hard to miss with multiple booth spaces set up to engage eligible NJWELL members in health and wellness activities. Activities included biometric screenings by Quest Diagnostics, flu shots performed by Rite Aid, and HbA1c screenings in the Novo Nordisk “living room.” At the main NJWELL booth, thousands of attendees stopped by to speak to NJWELL representatives about program requirements and incentives and took home some great NJWELL promotional items too!

Know NJWELL’s Numbers!

Many people took advantage of the three opportunities to earn points in Year 3 of NJWELL. Here is a look at how many participated in the wellness activities over the course of the two-day convention:

  • Biometric Screenings conducted by Quest Diagnostics – 429
The biometric screenings allowed participants to “know their numbers” such as cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and other factors. The screening awarded points towards the financial incentive and extra points if the participant’s numbers were within a certain threshold.
  • Flu Shots administered by Rite Aid – 373
The Rite Aid staff not only provided an amazing number of flu shots and education, but also provided participants with other vaccinations.
  • Diabetes (HbA1c) Screenings at the Diabetes Living Room through Novo Nordisk – 425
Novo Nordisk’s Diabetes Living Room provided participants with a unique experience: An HbA1c screening was performed in a private area and while waiting for their results, participants could relax in a modern, yet comfortable “living room.” They could watch live cooking demonstrations and sample healthy food by celebrity chef, Dana Herbert, listen to Certified Diabetes Educators, and obtain important printed materials about diabetes. The booth was a hit with convention-goers and Novo Nordisk shared some of their observations with the NJWELL team:

“I saw one particular woman crying after she completed her screening and I approached her to make sure she was ok. She stated “Oh, no these are happy tears. I was diagnosed Type 2 a few years ago and I took this past year to get healthy.” She told me that she had lost a lot of weight, focused on her health, and was no longer taking medication. She then shared that her screening suggested that she was no longer Type 2!”

“…there were several people who had a definitive HbA1c level which diagnostically defines them as Type 2 diabetic and they had absolutely no idea. Our Certified Diabetes Educators did a phenomenal job explaining things to people and instructing them how to follow up with their healthcare provider. Literally, the Diabetes Living Room saved lives during this event! These people can now create a plan with their physicians to live a long, healthy life with diabetes.”

Preventative activities like those provided at the NJEA convention are so important in maintaining or improving overall health and the NJWELL program would like to thank all of the providers and participants that made this event a huge success!

On September 3, 2015, NJWELL held a promotional table on the concourse of Arm and Hammer Stadium/Home of the Trenton Thunder (Trenton). Our staff provided information and giveaways to those who stopped by our table to learn more about NJWELL!
On June 3, 2015, the Division of Pensions and Benefits held the inaugural NJWELL "Mid-Day Move" for State employees working in the downtown Trenton area from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. State employees were encouraged to take a "walking lunch" instead of a working lunch. Employees were also encouraged to visit the informational booths for NJWELL, Aetna, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey to learn more about the benefits of the NJWELL program. Several other healthy living vendors were also in attendance. Over 1,000 employees registered for this fun and educational event!
