Pensions and Benefits

Beginning in mid-September, nominations will be accepted for two PERS Trustee positions: State Representative, and Municipal Representative. The terms for both offices will be from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019.

A notice of election will be distributed by mid-September to all employing locations with enrolled PERS State and municipal members.

NOTE:  State PERS members may only run as and vote for State PERS candidates; municipal PERS members may only run as and vote for the municipal PERS candidates.

The Certifying Officer at your employing location is required to distribute this information to all eligible employees when the notice is received.
If you wish to declare your interest in running for one of the positions, please send a written request no later than December 1, 2015 to the PERS Board Secretary, at Pensions.NJ@treas.state.nj.us or PO Box 295, Trenton, NJ 08625-0295.

The Board of Trustees has the general responsibility for the operation of the PERS, under N.J.S.A. 43:15A-17. The Board meets monthly at the Division of Pensions and Benefits in Trenton. The statute provides that no employee shall suffer loss of salary or wages because of serving on the Board. A member who wishes to be a candidate for one of the above positions must be an active or retired member of the PERS and must receive at least 500 active PERS members.

Only State employees may petition for State Representative; and only municipal employees may petition for Municipal Representative. Instructions for the nominating process are available upon receipt of a written request to the Secretary of the PERS Board of Trustees.

After candidates have declared their interest in becoming a PERS representative, nominations to support a candidate are made primarily through a secure website.  The process is very easy and only takes a few minutes.

You will need to provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, the first 4 letters of your last name, and your year/month of birth.  You will then see a list of all the candidates and you can make your choice. (Links will become operational around 9-21-15.)

Paper nominating petitions are also available upon request to the PERS Board Office at the address above.

NOTE for State candidates:  State departmental policies prohibit the use of State resources for the purpose of promoting a candidate for this election.  You will need to find other means to forward your nomination process.

Nominations must be received on-line or arrive in the Board Office on or before 4:00 p.m. Friday January 8, 2016, If more than one candidate receives 500 or more nominations, then an election will be required.  Election ballots will be mailed to PERS employers for distribution on or about April 1, 2016.
