Before You Call Us

Unauthorized persons regularly try to access private tax records. The Division of Taxation is committed to preventing such violations of your privacy and cybercrimes such as identity theft.

That’s why, when you call us, we ask questions to verify your identity. You must answer the questions correctly before we can assist you. This is a critical line of defense against hackers and identity thieves.

Have the Information Below Ready Before You Dial:

New Jersey individual tax return New Jersey business tax return
  • The name(s) on the tax return;
  • Your Social Security number and, if applicable, the Social Security number of your spouse or domestic partner;
  • A dollar amount listed on your tax return or a billing notice;
  • A copy of the tax return in question.

  • The business name;
  • Your New Jersey identification number (usually your Federal Identification Number with a three-digit suffix) or your New Jersey Corporate Identification Number;
  • The business location or mailing address;
  • If you are an authorized representative of the business.

Before You Visit Us

You can visit one of our Regional Information Centers for assistance. Have your New Jersey driver license or other government-issued photo ID card with you to confirm your identity. Make sure to bring all necessary documentation if you are responding to a notice we sent you.

If you are authorized to discuss someone else’s tax return, notice or letter, please complete the Form M-5008-R, Appointment of Taxpayer Representative before going to a Regional Information Center. Make sure to bring all necessary documentation.
