Course Description

Human Resource (HR) professionals play a vital role in an organization's success. Charged with helping the organization recruit, select, retain and reward the best employees, one must deal daily with the web of complex requirements and issues that characterize HR management.

The HR Horizons Program is designed specifically to help HR Professionals meet the challenges of today's business world. It consists of a selection of core and supplemental courses that cover the many different dimensions of HR administration in organizations. Completion of the program results in a Certificate in Human Resource Management from the Civil Service Commission and the NJ Community College Consortium for Workforce Development.

The program has separate track requirements for State and Local Government staff.

State total: 10 Mandatory and 6 Supplemental Courses totaling 96 hours
Local total: 9 Mandatory and 6 Supplemental Courses totaling 84 hours

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - 3 hours
Diversity - 3 hours
Conflict Resolution - 6 hours
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) - 6 hours
Legal Implications of Interviewing - 6 hours
Performance Planning - 6 hours
Discipline and Grievance Handling - 6 hours

Additional State Government Core Courses: 24 hours
Pension and Benefits - 6 hours
Understanding Classification and State Compensation - 6 hours
Understanding Civil Service NJAC 4A for State Government - 12 hours

Additional Local Government Core Courses: 12 hours
Pension and Benefits - 6 hours
Understanding Civil Service NJAC 4A for Local Government - 6 hours

Supplemental Courses for State  & Local Government: 36 hours
Business Writing - 6 hours
Critical Thinking - 6 hours
Customer Service - 6 hours
Face-to-Face  - 6 hours
Problem Solving and Decision Making - 6 hours

Please complete the HR-1 Training Authorization Form to request classroom training. Your direct supervisor, departmental training coordinator and fiscal officer must approve the form. HR-1's received without proper approval will be returned to the Department's Training Coordinator.

You are not scheduled for the requested classroom training until you receive an official email confirmation from CLIP.
