4/28/06

Looks like great shad fishing this weekend through the Delaware Water Gap and beyond!

Recent rains have raised the river forcing the shad out of the channel to migrate near the shore where there is less current. Some shoreline anglers are hooking up just 10 feet out and are catching 10 – 12 shad on each trip. Chartreuse spoons or darts appear to be the best offering.

In Delaware Bay, weakfish and bluefish are showing up, shad have petered out.

Delaware Bay Waterman, Captain George Kumor, reported that the largest American shad that he caught this year weighed 14.5 lbs. He released it back to the bay on 4/18, noting his respect for a fish that large and old that has obviously spawned multiple times. His all time heaviest shad was 16 lbs. That fish, too, was released.

FISHING REPORT - 4/25/06 - (from Gary Conner)

3-4 INCHES OF RAIN IN 48 HOURS HAS A WAY OF SCREWING UP THE FISHING UP AND DOWN THE RIVER.

VERY FEW SHAD WERE WEIGHED IN LAST WEEKEND AT THE FORKS OF THE RIVER SHAD TOURNAMENT.

THE RIVER IS HIGH AND MUDDY FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. LOOK FOR CLEARING CONDITIONS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH OVER THE NEXT 3-4 DAYS.

THE FURTHER NORTH YOU GO THE BETTER CHANCE OF CLEAR FISHABLE WATER.

10-15 SHAD WERE OBSERVED BY RICH IN LORDVILLE NY YESTERDAY.

IF YOU FISH HIGH MUDDY WATER TIE UP IN THE TREES, USE HEAVIER LINE AND A SHORTER DROP BACK.

KEEP A LOOKOUT UPSTREAM FOR FLOATING DEBRIS THAT COULD RIDE UP THE ANCHOR ROPE AND SWAMP YOUR BOAT IN SECONDS.

THE HERRING BITE WAS NONEXISTANT OVER THE WEEKEND AND ONLY ONE 27# STRIPER WAS OBSERVED. A BANK ANGLER LANDED IT ON CUT BAIT 2 MILES SOUTH OF THE NESHAMINY RAMP.

KEEP REPORTING TO CONNERFISH@AOL.COM OR LEAVE A V MAIL DURING THE DAY AT 215-674-1117.

FISHING REPORT - 4/17/06

Steve Meserve of the Lewis Fishery, Lambertville report: one A. shad on Monday 4/10, none Tuesday, had Wednesday off and 4 A. shad and 58 gizzard shad on Thurs. 4/13.

Captain George Kumor, Delaware Bay Waterman report: netted a total of 6,000 lbs. of 8 – 12 lb. roe A. shad on 4/9 & 4/10. He felt that was the bulk of the run, right on time for Holy Week when the majority of his customers eat roe shad. George speculates that school of fish are now at the mouth of the Cohansey River, stretching up to the mouth of the Salem River.

Delaware River flows are extremely low and as a result, the shad are migrating in the channel where boat anglers are catching mostly bucks. Shore anglers report poor catches and are hoping for higher water levels that bring shad within casting range. Unfortunately, no significant rain is in the forecast.

FISHING REPORT - 4/11/06 - (from Gary Conner)

FISHING REPORT - 4/9/06 - (from Gary Conner)

THE OLD SAYING "WHAT DO YOU GET AFTER THREE GREAT DAYS OF FISHING??? SATURDAY!"

SATURDAY WAS A BUST.

SUNDAY STARTED OUT WITH WATER TEMPERATURES DOWN TO 43 DEGREES. THE AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES WERE UP TO 47 DEGREES BUT THAT’S NOT GREAT NEWS.

TONY REPORTS FROM THE POWER PLANT 6 SHAD CAUGHT THIS MORNING ON THE INCOMING TIDE.

THE HERRING FLEET OF 30+ BOATS WERE UP BY THE TRENTON BRIDGES. IN 20 MINUTES OF OBSERVATION NO HERRING WERE LANDED.

FIVE BOATS WERE OUT AT LAMBERTVILLE, BIG D REPORTS 1 SHAD LANDED ONE PRO RELEASE. NO OTHER LANDINGS WERE SIGHTED.

CHECKING THE WEATHER REPORTS AND OTHER CONDITIONS MAKE ME WANT TO TAKE OFF WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND GIVE LAMBERTVILLE A SERIOUS TRY FROM ABOUT 4-7 PM.

IF STRIPERS ARE YOUR FANCY TRY THE RANCOCAS FLATS WITH BLOOD WORMS. HAVEN'T HEARD OF A TIDE PREFERENCE YET.

SEE YOU ON THE RIVER.

Friday, 4/7/06 Report

The Hydroacoustic equipment at the Rt. 202 bridge in Lambertville was installed on 3/17/06. So far, in span 3, a small shad school was detected on 26 March (during hour 15). In span 5, small schools were detected on 26 March (during hours 13 and 16). Span 5 is closest to NJ shore.

Wednesday, 4/5/06, 7:56am Report

Steve Meserve, of the Lewis Fishery, Lambertville, NJ, seined his first American shad: 5 bucks & 1 five lb. roe on 4/4/06. He also caught and released walleyes, many smallmouth bass, carp, gizzard shad and 2 shortnose sturgeon of 24” & 27". On 4/3/06 he caught and released a 32" shortnose sturgeon.

On 4/4/06, Captain George Kumor on Delaware Bay, landed 600 lbs. of 7 - 12 lb. roes. He feels that the abundant stripers have the A. shad "balled up" in different areas of the bay, the A. shad run is about 6 days late and the next dramatic warm up will get them moving. Not warming up too quickly, he hopes, as he could miss the entire run. This has happened in the past.

Since 3/8/06, NJ Bureau of Marine Fisheries in Delaware Bay has tagged & released 781 striped bass and 39 A. shad (18 on 4/3).

Twelve American shad were reportedly caught on homemade flutter spoons at the Trenton Power Plant on 4/4/06.

Shad begin to hit at darts and flutter spoons when the water temperature reaches 50 F degrees. The temperature of Delaware River at Trenton is now 53.6 F and the flow is only 23.3% of what it usually is this time of year. A. Shad will be biting, but boat anglers will definitely have the advantage over shoreline anglers, as these fish will undoubtedly be in single file, directly in the center of the river channel. Boats positioned and lures presented in the center of the channel should catch shad.

FISHING REPORT - 4/2/06 - (from Gary Conner)

EVERY THING IS LOOKING FISHY. WATER TEMPS AT THE TRENTON RAMP WERE 56 DEGREES WITH THE COVE REGISTERING 62 DEGREES.

THE FORSYTHIA IS IN BLOOM AS FAR NORTH AS LAMBERTVILLE, BUT STILL NOTHING HAPPENING THAT FAR NORTH.

THE LEWIS FISHERY IS STILL WAITING FOR THE FIRST SHAD IN THE NET.

ONLY 2 SHAD WERE REPORTED FROM THE TRENTON POWER PLANT COVE. EVEN WITH A STRONG WIND IT WAS COMFORTABLE IN THE COVE.

STRIPER ACTION IS STARTING TO HEAT UP. BLOOD WORMS ARE THE BAIT OF CHOICE, PRICEY BUT WORTH IT. THE FLATS IN WATER OF LESS THAN 15 FEET ARE PRODUCING WELL. ONE BOAT LANDED 8 TODAY, LARGEST 20 #.

FISHING REPORT - 3/31/06 - (from Gary Conner)

STOTCH RAN THE RIVER TODAY FROM THE GAP TO LAMBERTVILLE.

THE TEMPERATURE AT THE GAP WAS 51 DEGREES AND LAMBERTVILLE 54 DEGREES. 29 BOATS WERE SPREAD OUT OVER 12 LOCATIONS.

THE WATER CONDITIONS ARE CLEAR AND LOW WITH A SLOW FLOW.

THE TRENTON POWER PLANT COVE IS THE PLACE TO BE FOR SHORE CASTERS THIS WEEKEND.

LAMBERTVILLE IS MY CHOICE TO LAUNCH THIS WEEKEND, STAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CHANNEL. TRY AT LEAST ONE LIGHT COLORED FLUTTER. THE AFTERNOON BITE WOULD BE MY CHOICE, IF THE SUN SHINES THE WATER TEMPERATURE COULD HIT THE MAGIC 55 DEGREE MARK.

REMEMBER, PUT THE PFD ON BEFORE YOU LAUNCH AND DON'T TAKE IT OFF TILL THE BOAT IS BACK ON THE TRAILER. WITH WATER TEMPERATURES THIS COLD YOU CANNOT SWIM FOR A MINUTE BEFORE HYPOTHERMIA IMMOBILIZES YOUR ARMS.
