Hourly Fisheries Technician (Marine)

 

Location: Nacote Creek Research Lab, Port Republic, Atlantic County

Work Week: Monday through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., some weekend field assignments

Salary: $13 per hour

Two positions are available with the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Administration. Primary job descriptions for each position listed below but some job duties may overlap. Both appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey and work 35 hours weekly, including occasional weekend work. Basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) are required.

Position 1 Job Description: Assist with field and data processing duties of fishery research projects. Primary responsibility will be assisting in the administration of the Striped Bass Bonus Program. This includes data processing and issuing permits. Additional responsibility will include weekend field sampling at fishing tournaments throughout the state.

Requirements: Preference given to a college graduate or student working towards a degree in marine science, natural resource management, environmental studies, or related field with at least one year of experience. Organizational skills are necessary to process thousands of applications and permits. Must be able to identify various marine and estuarine finfish species.

Position 2 Job Description: Assist with field and data processing duties of fishery research projects. This includes working aboard small boats, setting nets, sorting, quantifying and measuring the catch. Recording catch and other pertinent data in the field in addition to measuring basic water quality parameters utilizing proper instrumentation. Responsible for maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles, boats, trailers and equipment.

Requirements: Preference give to a college graduate with ability to identify various marine and estuarine finfish species. A NJ Boating Safety Certificate is preferred.
