The Green Acres Mission

To achieve, in partnership with others, a system of interconnected open spaces, whose protection will preserve and enhance New Jersey's natural environment and its historic, scenic, and recreational resources for public use and enjoyment.

The Green Acres Program was created in 1961 to meet New Jersey's growing recreation and conservation needs.

Together with public and nonprofit partners, the Green Acres Program has directly protected 650,000 acres of open space and provided hundreds of outdoor recreational facilities in communities around the state. Over the years, voters have authorized $3.3 billion in Green Acres funding, approving every bond referendum put before them.

Green Acres is committed to preserving New Jersey's rich natural, historic, and cultural heritage. Hundreds of thousands of acres of conservation and recreation lands have been preserved, and hundreds of public parks have been developed with Green Acres funds.

Recreation needs are as diverse as the people who play. To meet these needs, Green Acres funds different types of parks in a variety of settings. Whether in rural, suburban, or urban areas, parks play an important role in sustaining New Jersey's high quality of life.
