New Jersey State Parks Celebrates National Trails Day Saturday, June 5, 2021

National Trails Day, founded by the American Hiking Society, is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. The New Jersey State Park Service invites you to explore, discover and volunteer at the trails at YOUR state parks. We are hosting many volunteer work projects and guided hikes through out the state.

In addition to these opportunities, you can find a hike to do on your own by visiting NJ Trail Tracker or take advantage of some our self-guided hikes.

Volunteer Trail Work Projects

These events offer opportunities to lend a hand in creating and maintaining the over 1,000 miles of trails within New Jersey State Park Service public lands. All projects require pre-registration.

Liberty State Park Nature Center

Trailblazer Volunteer Day: Volunteer Trailblazers will focus on removing invasive weeds and vines from the Richard J. Sullivan Natural Area and general trail maintenance to improve habitat in Liberty State Park. We recommend that you wear long sleeves, pants, sturdy shoes, and work gloves. Washington Crossing State Park

Give Thanks for the Trail: Join the park staff to assist maintaining the trails at Washington Crossing State Park. Please bring your own manual hand tools (bow saws, lopping shears, etc.) but the park will have a few available to borrow. For more information and to register please call the Nature Center at 609-737-0609. The entrance fee to the park will be waived for registered volunteers.

Wawayanda State Park

Time: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (self-guided)

Trails Cleanup: Meet up and clean up for National Trails Day! Join us in picking up litter and maintaining the trails at any Wawayanda State Park trail of your choice! Bags will be provided when you pre-register and full bags can be dropped off at the park office when completed.

Bass River State Forest

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Meeting Place: 762 Stage Road, Tuckerton, NJ 08087. Meet at lake parking lot.

Guided Family Nature Hike: Join the Volunteer Naturalist, Kathy Gardiner for an interpretive nature hike through the forest of Bass River. You will learn about the flora, history of the park, and the importance of a pollinator garden. Participants will explore an Atlantic white cedar swamp, walk along the lake and view the campground. The hike will be 2.5 miles is open for ages 4 and up and there will be a limit of 20 people. Please bring water and sturdy footwear is recommended. While the hike is free, participants will be responsible for paying the park entrance free. For more information, please email Kathy at

Bass River State Forest

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Meeting Place: 762 Stage Rd, Tuckerton, NJ 08087. Meet at Interpretive Center across from campsite 13.

Fire in the Pines: Join in a hike on Joe’s Trail along the Absegami Lake to the Orange Trail with a stop the Fireman’s Memorial where we will discuss the affects of fire in the pinelands. We will also visit remnants of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. This hike is approximately 3 miles long on a flat trail. Brendan T. Byrne State Forest

National Trails Day Hike: Come out and celebrate National Trails Day with us at Brendan T. Byrne State Forest! We will go for a two-mile hike around the Red Canberry Trail and explore the native plants and wildlife of the Pine Barrens. Double Trouble State Park

National Trails Day at Double Trouble State Park: Join our seasonal historian for a 5-mile guided overview of the park’s history, industry, plants, and wildlife. Expect relatively flat terrain, but a possibility of some mud depending on weather. You may wish to carry a water bottle, small snack, bug spray (ticks are out), and sunscreen. Forest Resource Education Center

NJ Pineland Forest: Upland and Wetland: Join the staff of the Forest Resource Education Center as they explore parts of different trails. This free hike focuses on tree species of a Pinelands upland forest as well as wetland swamp species. Participants will be able to visit a recent prescribed burn area. High Point State Park and New Jersey Veterans' Memorial

National Trails Day Hike: Help High Point State Park celebrate National Trails Day by participating in a hike guided by member of the New Jersey Search and Rescue Team(NJSAR). The hike will start from the Appalachian Trail Hiker Parking Lot on Route 23. There will be scenic views along the way and a challenging rock scramble. Maximum elevation =1600 ft., Minimum elevation = 1300 ft. Members of NJSAR will be along to assist. Approximate distance is STRENUOUS 5.8 miles. Bring along water, snack, and a bag lunch. Insect, sunscreen, and binoculars will come in handy. For more information click here.

Kittatinny Valley State Park

Lollipop Hike: Does the name of this hike refer to the shape of our route, or your sweet treat reward..or both? Join us for this fun, flat, 5-mile hike to find out “Discover What You’ve Been Missing” . This hike is appropriate for adults and teens (accompanied by an adult). Paulinskill Valley Trail

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Meeting Place: Blairstown Airport. GPS Coordinates (Decimal) 40.970082, -74.995344 Route 80 to Exit 12. Go north on Route 521 for 5 miles to Route 94 in Blairstown. Turn left onto Route 94 and follow Route 94 approximately 2.2 miles to Lambert Road. (Rite Aid on left corner). Turn left on Lambert Road and follow it approximately 1 mile to the airport.

Hike on the Paulinskill: June 5, the Paulinskill Valley Trail Committee (PVTC) will be hosting a free 4 mile group hike. The hike will begin at 10:00 at the Blairstown Airport in Blairstown, NJ. All ages are welcome, and children must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Dogs on leashes are also welcome and be sure to bring some water. The PVTC will be sponsoring a booth display at the Blairstown Airport from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For questions, please send an email to
