Salma T. Chand

Executive Legal Affairs Officer

Salma T. Chand is the executive legal affairs officer at the New Jersey Department of Education.  Ms. Chand is responsible for providing general legal support and guidance to the various offices and divisions within the department in conjunction with the Attorney General’s Office.  She also supervises the Office of Controversies & Disputes and the Office of School Ethics and Compliance.

Ms. Chand comes from the Office of Counsel to Governor Murphy, where she served as Associate Counsel.  While at the Office of Counsel to the Governor, Ms. Chand reviewed and made recommendations to Governor Murphy on legislation affecting the Department of Education, the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, the Department of Community Affairs, the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Agriculture.  She also assisted with the Governor’s agenda on education, higher education, affordable housing, and agriculture.

Prior to her time with Governor Murphy’s administration, she worked as an associate for Mason, Griffin, and Pierson, P.C. in Princeton and Cole Schotz P.C. in Hackensack.  

Ms. Chand is a member of the South Asian Bar Association and the New Jersey Muslim Lawyers Association.  Ms. Chand also previously served as the outreach coordinator for Governor Jon S. Corzine and is a former member of the New Brunswick Planning Board.

She received her Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Rutgers University.  Ms. Chand is admitted to practice law in New Jersey and New York.
