Step 2. Certificate Types:

There are three different types of certificates to choose from: CE, CEAS, and Standard.

Certificate Type: CE

The certificate of eligibility is a credential with lifetime validity issued to an individual who has not completed a teacher preparation program. Please submit the out-of-state Alternate Route Program form.

Certficate Type: CEAS

The certifificate of eligibility with advanced standing is a credential issued to an individual who has completed a teacher preparation program. The CEAS is issued to an individual who does not hold a NJ standard certificate.

Certificate Type: Standard

This is a permanent certificate issued to an individual who has met all requirements for state certification. This certificate is issued to an individual who has successfully completed the PTP program, holds a previously issued NJ standard instructional certificate, or is someone who holds a valid out-of-state equivalent standard instructional certificate with at least two effective years of teaching that were completed within three consecutive years within the last four calendar years. Step 3. Praxis Test

Praxis Test

Take any applicable Praxis II: Subject Assessment/Specialty Area test(s). Test registration procedures, registration form and other information are available through the Praxis Web site at or the School Leadership Series Web site at Online registration is also available.

Basic Skills Test

All candidates must pass a Commissioner-approved test of basic skills, or score in the top one-third percentile on the SAT, ACT, or GRE for the year the test was taken. The top one-third percentile score for each test, for each year the data is available, is posted to the Department's website at:

Step 4. Transcript Evaluation

Transcript Evaluation

Obtain a transcript evaluation. The NJ Department Of Education is not authorized to determine the equivalent of studies completed in other countries for education in the United States. Applicants should therefore consult a credential evaluation service by searching the yellow pages or internet. These agencies charge various fees for the credentials evaluation.

Applicants choosing to consult a credentials evaluation service should request the following:

  • The equivalent of studies to a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year college program;
  • The semester-hour equivalent of each area of college-level study. Please request the two-part evaluation that includes a course-by-course listing;
  • The cumulative baccalaureate grade point average for teacher certification applicants.

After applying online, please submit ALL necessary documentation together IN A SINGLE PACKET to the NJ DOE in order to complete your application. Please submit the following documents: official sealed transcripts and transcript evaluation, and a letter of experience(if applicable)
