Governor Murphy Names Tanya Freeman as Chair of University Hospital

Trenton - Governor Phil Murphy today announced the designation of Tanya Freeman as Chair of University Hospital. Freeman was first appointed to the Board of Directors at University Hospital on September 22, 2014 and will serve as chair until the expiration of her term.

“Today I am proud to designate Tanya Freeman as chair of Newark’s University Hospital,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “Tanya’s experience on the board, coupled with her extensive background working for the best interests of children and families through her law practice and her community service, make her an exceptional candidate to serve in this leadership position.”

“I take great pride in my contributions to University Hospital and the communities it serves, and I am honored to continue my service as chair,” said Tanya Freeman, Chair of University Hospital. “I look forward to continuing to work with my fellow board members, medical practitioners, and community members to provide the best possible care to everyone who walks through our doors.”

“Tanya Freeman’s leadership on the Board of Trustees at University Hospital will be foundational for the substantial improvements we hope to see in the months ahead,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal. “Her breadth of experience and track record of success will bode well for the hospital’s future.”

Freeman is a partner in Weiner Law Group, LLP, in Parsippany, New Jersey where she provides legal representation in all aspects of family law. Prior to practicing law, Freeman spent fifteen years in banking and insurance in a variety of capacities directing operational audit teams.

Freeman devotes time to community efforts, which include her service on the Board of Trustees at the Hudson County Bar Association and her past service as the Circle of Red Chairperson to the Northern New Jersey American Heart Association, Chair to the Juvenile Justice/Family Court Subcommittee of the Hudson County Vicinage Minority Concerns Committee.  Additionally, she previously served as a member of the Board of Directors, Salvation Army in Jersey City, New Jersey and a member of the Board of Directors for the University of Phoenix, Jersey City Campus. She lives in West Orange with her husband and six children.

Freeman received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Caldwell College and her Juris Doctor from Touro Law School.
