First Lady Mary Pat Christie, Health Commissioner To AnnounceGrants for Autism Medical Homes and Expansion of Autism Research

On Thursday, June 25, 2015, First Lady Mary Pat Christie and Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd will join parents, hospital officials, autism care providers, and members of the Governor's Council for Medical Research and Treatment of Autism to announce grants to establish Autism Medical Homes and advance research in the understanding, prevention, evaluation and treatment of autism. 

Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack and Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune will receive grants to establish autism medical homes. In addition, eight other research grants will be awarded to medical schools and universities for a variety of clinical and translational research including projects that would develop early markers of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and study how diverse populations with an autism diagnosis link to services.

The medical home pilot projects are designed to improve health outcomes of children with autism by bringing together all providers on the continuum of care to improve the quality of and access to services for children and families.

The announcement will be held at 1pm in the Kurr Atrium of Jersey Shore Medical Center, 1945 Route 33, Neptune, 07753.
 
Speakers include John Lloyd, President and CEO of Meridian Health; Dr. Jeffrey Boscamp, vice president and chief academic officer at Hackensack University Medical Center; Dr. Matthew McDonald, chief of special needs pediatrics for Children's Specialized; Dr. Steven Kairys, chief of pediatrics for Meridian; Dr. Caroline Eggerding, chair of the Governor's Council for Medical Research and Treatment of Autism; and the mother of a 3-year-old child with autism.
