Supplemental Security Income (SSI): SSI is a Federal program administered through the Social Security Administration (SSA) that pays benefits to adults and children with disabilities, as well as people over 65 without disabilities, who have limited income and resources.  The program provides a monthly stipend and NJ FamilyCare to eligible applicants. 

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): SSDI pays disability benefits to you and certain members of your family if you have worked long enough and have a medical condition that has prevented you from working or is expected to prevent you from working for at least 12 months or end in death.

Administered by the New Jersey Department of Labor, State Temporary Disability provides assistance for those who have become disabled due to injury or illness that is not job related. 

If you are disabled due to injury or illness that is job related, contact the Division of Workers' Compensation.

Most workers who become disabled within 14 days of their last day of work in covered New Jersey employment may be covered for disability insurance under the State Plan or an approved Private Plan. Inquiries concerning your own coverage may be directed to your employer.

There is a third program for those whose disabilities begin more than 14 days after the last day of work. This program is known as "Disability During Unemployment"

DFD is responsible for overseeing financial assistance programs and critical safety net services to individuals and families in New Jersey. Among the programs within this agency are Work First New Jersey/Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (WFNJ/TANF) and WFNJ/General Assistance (WFNJ/GA) – the two programs that make up the state’s welfare program; NJ SNAP (formerly Food Stamps); Child Support services and Child Care services.

The agencies responsible for administering DFD programs are: the county and municipal welfare agencies (also known as County Boards of Social Services) and One-Stop Career Centers for Work First New Jersey; the county welfare agencies for NJ SNAP; Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (CCR&Rs) for child care subsidies; and county welfare agencies, court and probation offices, and DFD for child support.

The Catastrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund (CICRF) is a New Jersey financial assistance program for families whose children have a disability or illness resulting in expenses that are not fully covered by insurance, state or federal programs, or other sources. Families that have lived in New Jersey for at least three months immediately preceding the date of application may be eligible if they have incurred health care expenses that exceed 10 percent of the family's income (plus 15 percent of any income over $100,000). The child must have been 21 years old or younger when the bills were incurred. Families may reapply annually.
