TRENTON - Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Commissioner Jennifer Velez today reminds residents that the “Snow Removal Law” requires business owners and operators of parking lots to remove snow and ice from “handicapped” parking spaces, curb cuts and ramps designed to provide physical access for people with disabilities.“Snow and ice are a safety concern for all state residents but this is a vital concern for people with disabilities, who need to access business, medical, educational and community facilities,” said Commissioner Velez. “We need to be aware and remind others to clear pathways of snow and ice to help ensure access and safety in our communities.”

The Snow Removal Law (N.J.S.A. 39:4-207.9) requires property owners to clear accessible areas of snow and ice within 24 hours of inclement weather or risk receiving a fine.  The fines for violations range from $500 to $1,000.

“Snow and ice are an inconvenience to everyone but to people with disabilities they can become a barrier,” said DHS’ Division of Disability Services Director Joseph Amoroso.  “By removing ice and snow from sidewalks and access areas, we help ensure that everyone can get to their destinations.”

The DHS’ Division of Disability Services (DDS) is New Jersey’s point of entry for disability services and responds to as many as 15,000 requests annually for Information and Referral Assistance on issues affecting people with any type of disability in New Jersey. DDS works in partnership with other state agencies in New Jersey to provide assistance to people with disabilities.  The DDS toll-free hotline is 1-888-285-3036 and more information can be found on the DDS website,
