Register with FEMA and the Red Cross

FEMA:
Evacuees must register with FEMA!
If you do not have a FEMA Registration Number you will not receive services. You can also use the number for identification at banks, airlines, and other places.

To register:
Call 1-800-621-3362; call at off-peak hours, if possible, to avoid periods of highest volume. TTY users can call 1-800-462-7588. Registration by phone takes about 15 minutes.

Or, register on-line. On the FEMA homepage, click on the green box.

Red Cross:
If you are now located in New Jersey, you should register with the local Red Cross for disaster assistance. Check here for New Jersey Red Cross Chapters or search by zip code on the Red Cross Web site.

The American Red Cross also has launched a 24-hour-a-day Toll-Free Call Center expanding the ability to meet the essential needs of hurricane evacuees:
1-800-975-7585.

Information and Referrals for Basic Needs
To begin to meet your basic needs, you will need to apply for such things as interim housing, income support, medical care, education for children, insurance claims, etc. The application process varies by program. You will find further information by selecting from the topics on the left side of this page.

Call 2-1-1 to learn about local community resources available to hurricane evacuees and for referrals to local services. Additionally, a care management professional is also available to help you and your family identify needed services, to assist with referrals, contacts, and authorizations, to help educate regarding benefits and systems, and to identify community resources (with assistance and continued support from 2-1-1).

You can find information about specific home state services in Louisiana, Alabama (or toll-free: 1-866-283-2838), or Mississippi (or toll-free: 1-866-230-8903).

Most recent information on any important topics related to Hurricanes Katrina or Rita can be found, in English and Spanish, at the U.S. Government official Web portal: www.firstgov.gov.
