TRENTON – Up to $3.9 million in grants are available through the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) to fund paid summer internships under the Office of Youth Programs’ Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
SYEP provides in-school and out-of-school youth, ages 16-24, with valuable summer internships to help them successfully transition to the working world. Meaningful summer work experience has the potential to combat poverty, unemployment, and crime rates by introducing young residents to career path opportunities.
“Introducing thoughtful work experiences into the lives of our young people, and giving them the supports they need to make decisions about possible career and training paths – that is how we build New Jersey’s future workforce,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo.
Eligible applicants include all local Workforce Development Boards across the Garden State. Program proposals are to include 35 hours of workforce readiness training; interns must participate 25 hours per week, 200 hours over eight weeks, and earn a wage of $13.50 per hour. Grants will be awarded at a rate of $2,800 per intern, with $2,700 for participant stipends and $100 for workforce readiness.
An information session will be held via webinar at 10 a.m., January 19, with registration required by January 14. Applications must be submitted no later than noon, February 4.
