Click
it or Ticket - It’s Saving Lives in
New Jersey!
Local,
County and State Police Mobilize for New
Jersey’s Largest Seat Belt Enforcement
Campaign
|
|
(Seaside
Heights) - Click It or Ticket, the seat
belt initiative is working in the Garden
State, but there is more to be done to
save precious lives and reduce injuries.
New Jersey’s law enforcement community
gathered today on the Boardwalk to announce
the start of this year’s enforcement
campaign. It encourages adults and children
to protect their lives in vehicle crashes
by buckling up.
The seat belt initiative will run from
May 23 - June 5, 2005 and will involve
a record number of police agencies.
“The
goal of our Click It or Ticket campaign
is to encourage seat belt use by the remaining
18 percent of the driving population in
New Jersey that still refuses to buckle
up,” said Attorney General Harvey.
“We want to protect motorists from
serious bodily injury or death.”
“82% of New Jersey motorists are
obeying the law and protecting their lives
by using seat belts” said Division
Director Roberto Rodriguez. “We
need to raise the bar and make that percentage
higher, which is the goal of the Click
It or Ticket campaign. Using seat belts
saves lives, which should be incentive
enough for motorists and their passengers.”
The Division of Highway Traffic Safety
has awarded 240 grants to state, local,
and county police departments to promote
the Click It or Ticket program in New
Jersey. The grants will fund high visibility
seat belt enforcement patrols during the
two-week mobilization period. Many other
police departments have stepped up to
the plate without the assistance of grant
funding to support the initiative. As
part of its mission to raise awareness,
the Division began a paid media advertising
campaign this week with the Click It or
Ticket message.
The
use of seat belts reduces a motor vehicle
occupant’s risk of fatal injury
by 45% and reduces the risk of moderate
to critical injury by 50% (Source: NHTSA).
Today’s announcement of the 2005
Click It or Ticket campaign came at the
state’s annual “101 Days of
Summer” kickoff on the Boardwalk,
an event designed to promote traffic safety
during the summer season.
