- OPEN
ENROLLMENT FOR THE NEW JERSEY STATE EMPLOYEES TAX SAVINGS
PROGRAM (Tax$ave 2003) IS NOW IN PROGRESS from September
13 through October 31, 2002. Tax$ave allows state employees
to save taxes on any State Health Benefits Programs premiums
that you pay and lets state employees set aside pre-tax
income to pay many of the expenses not covered by the
State Health Benefit Plan. If you would like additional
information on Tax$ave 2003, contact Mrs. Catherine Vasil
at 609-530-6888.

OF THE NEW JERSEY NATIONAL GUARD ARE SET TO PARTICIPATE
IN THE 18TH "ARMY 10-MILER" ON 20 OCTOBER 2002.
Close
to 20,000 runners from around the world will participate
in the world's largest 10-mile race that tours the nation's
capital. Runners will pass the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol,
the Washington monument and many other national treasures.

HAVEN SUPERINTENDENT MAKES PRESENTATION AT VETERANS ADMINISTRATION
(VA) MEDICAL CENTER. Bob Durante was invited to make
a presentation to the Community Homelessness Assessment,
Local Education and Networking Groups for Veterans (C.H.A.L.E.N.G.)
at a meeting last Friday. The meeting was held at the
Coatsville VA Medical Center and included homeless veterans
providers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Veterans Haven
was asked to participate because of our longstanding relationship
with the VA and its homeless initiatives, and our success
within the veterans community. Mr. Durante's presentation
included a history of the program in New Jersey, success
stories from our program, and funding issues and availability.

ROLLING
THUNDER WILL HOST A PICNIC FOR THE RESIDENTS OF VETERANS.
Rolling Thunder, Chapter Two, from Lacey, New Jersey,
will be roaring into Veterans Haven this Sunday with hot
dogs and hamburgers. The picnic will begin at 1 p.m. Since
many of Chapter Two's members are Vietnam Vets, this picnic
will provide the opportunity for chapter members and Veterans
Haven residents to share memories of their experiences.
Chapter Two has been a longstanding supporter of Veterans
Haven and their efforts are greatly appreciated by both
the staff and residents.

THE
DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY & VETERANS AFFAIRS HOSTS THE
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE MILITARY RESOURCE MANAGERS
(NASMRM) EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. From 1-3 October, the
Department hosted members of the NASMRM Executive Committee
and their representatives from eight regions across the
country. There were 23 visitors attending two days of
meetings to discuss past symposiums, organizational issues,
and formulate the agenda for the upcoming Symposium 2003,
which will be held at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Atlantic
City with our assistance and coordination. At the annual
Symposium there will be discussion panels and presentations
made by National Guard Bureau, Federal agencies, other
subject matter experts, and general discussions from other
States' financial executives. The theme of the Symposium
2003 is "Leveraging and Maximizing Resources". Mr. Jim
Brey, Chief Financial Officer, and COL William Bertsch,
Director, Installation Division, are the co-chairmen of
the annual event.

THE
AIR FORCE ANNOUNCES NEW SERVICE DRESS NAMETAG. Air
Force Print News reports that the Air Force's service
dress uniform welcomed back an old friend on October 1st
- the nametag. The new service dress nametag has a brushed
satin finish and blue letters. It is slightly larger and
heavier than the blue plastic nametag worn on the blue
shirt and medical white uniform. It will only feature
the wearer's last name and will only be worn on the service
dress on the right side, parallel to the ribbons and medals.
The new nametags will be available in Army and Air Force
Exchange Service military clothing sales stores at a future
date when stocks become available.

THE
NEW JERSEY ARMY NATIONAL GUARD IS SENDING 15 REPRESENTATIVES
FROM FOUR UNITS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL WINSTON P.
WILSON MATCHES AT CAMP ROBINSON LOCATED IN LITTLE ROCK,
ARKANSAS on 5-11 October 2002. The Wilson Match is
an Annual National Guard Marksman competition where the
winning teams from all of the states and territories compete
for national honors in Rifle, Pistol, and Machine Gun
disciplines. This year New Jersey will be represented
by soldiers from the 253d Transportation Company, 2-113th
Infantry Battalion, 3-112th Field Artillery
Battalion, and Headquarters, State Area Command. We wish
all of the competitors the best of luck!

JERSEY CELEBRATES ITS RICH HISTORY AND HERITAGE WITH THE
HARRIET TUBMAN-WILLIAM STILL UNDERGROUND RAILROAD JOURNEY,
A 180 MILE WALK CELEBRATING NEW JERSEY'S HISTORY AND HEROES
EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.
For fourteen consecutive days beginning on September 29,
2002 Secretary of State Regena Thomas will lead the walk
retracing New Jersey's Underground Railroad heritage from
Cumberland to Hudson County. It is a tribute to those
brave souls who sacrificed, aided, and followed this trail
to freedom, and a part of New Jersey's history in which
everyone can participate. Please log on to the state website

FATHER
(Lt Col) ALPHONSE STEPHENSON OF THE NEW JERSEY AIR NATIONAL
GUARD'S 108TH AIR REFUELING WING HAS BEEN NAMED
ITALIAN AMERICAN MAN OF THE YEAR BY UNICO,
a non-political and non-sectarian nationwide service organization
similar to Lions, Kiwanis, and Rotary. In a ceremony held
at the Crystal Point in Point Pleasant and attended by
Senator Jon Corzine, Father Stephenson received his own
day, as proclaimed by the Mayor of Brick, and he received
his own week, as proclaimed by the Ocean County Freeholders.
DMVA congratulates Father Stephenson on this honor!

THE
42ND INFANTRY DIVISION SUPPORT COMMAND RECENTLY
HELD AN OPEN HOUSE AT THE NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY IN SOMERSET,
NEW JERSEY.
The public was given a chance to view military equipment
and vehicles while speaking to the soldiers about their
experiences. A display of historic military vehicles,
rides in a military jeep, and a "slow" drag race to see
which military vehicle could finish the course in the
most amount of time were some of the day's highlights.
COL John Dwyer, Commander, hopes to make the open house
an annual event.
