TRENTON – The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) today launched new and improved resources for first time drivers on the MVC website.

The First Driver License/ID webpage has been overhauled and streamlined to make it easier for new drivers to start the process to obtain a New Jersey driver license regardless of immigration status. New tools have been added to this webpage, as well, including answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and a video guide for first time drivers. All of the new information is available in both English and Spanish.

The public is encouraged to check the First Driver License/ID webpage and the main MVC website at NJMVC.gov for continued updates in coming weeks.

“We anticipate an increase in demand for permits and first time driver licenses, especially once we begin licensing drivers regardless of immigration status,” said MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton. “The updated guidance and new resources will help make the process more user friendly for getting your first license in New Jersey.”

All customers seeking to be licensed in New Jersey should utilize the resources on the MVC website and the NJ Driver Manual, which also is available online in English and Spanish.

New Jersey drivers receive their driving privileges in phases. While requirements of the state’s Graduated Driver License Program differ depending on the age of the applicant, there are three steps to getting a license in New Jersey:

• Step 1:  Permit (includes knowledge test).
• Step 2:  Probationary license (includes road test).
• Step 3:  Basic driver license.

Starting May 1, New Jersey residents will be able to make appointments for driver licenses without regard to immigration status. At that time, appointments must be scheduled online at NJMVC.gov. The MVC will be providing additional information in the lead up to the May 1 start date.
