When completing the application, we ask that you use your own words to describe your "specific intended use” for the driver history abstracts in question. Applications will be denied if you simply copy your answers from the MVC database. (N.J.S.A. 39:2-3.4)

How to make an inquiry on CAIR
Once your application is approved, you will be required to make an initial deposit of $500. The deposit will cover individual inquiries in the database. Each one will be billed against your account and you will need to maintain a positive balance to continue accessing data.
You can make any inquiry by entering a license plate number, driver license number or vehicle identification number (VIN).
A license plate number inquiry will give you:
- Owner’s name and address
- Vehicle information
- Leased vehicle status
- Recent transaction dates
The driver license number inquiry will give you a five-year driver history abstract.
A VIN number inquiry will give you:
- Original mileage
- Mileage status
- Lien holder names and addresses.
If you opt to use the Ownership History option, the New Jersey VIN data will also be provided.
