Dr. Dan Van Abs   Dr. Dan Van Abs is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice for Water, Society & Environment at Rutgers University, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, where he focuses on planning and management policy for water infrastructure, water supply, wastewater and watershed protection. 

Previously, he served in New Jersey state government for over 26 years, as: Senior Director for Planning & Science with the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council (NJ), where he managed staff efforts regarding implementation of the Highlands Regional Master Plan; Director of Watershed Protection, NJ Water Supply Authority; and with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection for 12 years, six as manager for statewide water resources planning. Prior to joining NJDEP,  Dr. Van Abs was Technical Director of the Passaic River Coalition, a non-profit watershed association.   

A noted expert in the watershed management field, Dr. Van Abs has published numerous reports and papers on the subject, and is co-editor with Karen O’Neill of Taking Chances: The Coast After Sandy (Rutgers University Press, June 2016).  He received the 2017 Sustainable Raritan Award for his leadership in water resources management for the Raritan River Basin, and the 2010 Peter Homack Award from the New Jersey Chapter of the American Water Resources Association for his involvement in multi-disciplinary water resources management. 

In 2020, Dr. Van Abs was inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from SUNY-College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
