NJDOT awards $2.1 million in
FY97 municipal aid to Morris County

Haley also awards $136,505 to Dover for traffic plan

Governor Christie Whitman and Acting Commissioner John J. Haley, Jr. today announced the award of more than $2 million in municipal aid to 20 Morris County municipalities for local street repairs, resurfacing and safety improvement projects.

"In my State-of-the-State address, I talked of a road to a brighter future. The NJDOT’s Local Aid program helps provide those bright futures as a major funding source for hundreds of municipal road projects every year," Gov. Whitman said.

"This program is another example of her commitment to providing property tax relief to the municipalities and of the NJDOT’s commitment to rebuild our roads at all levels," Haley added.

A list of the Morris County municipalities receiving FY97 Local Aid grants is attached.

The Local Aid Program is supported by the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund. Under legislation signed by Governor Whitman in 1995, the Transportation Trust Fund was renewed and local aid funding was increased from $100 million to $130 million per year.

In addition to the local aid grants, Acting Commissioner Haley also presented a grant through the NJDOT’s Local Aid for Centers program for $136,505 to representatives from the Town of Dover. Dover was awarded the grant to make traffic management improvements to various Dover roads.

"Transportation funding is not just about building roads or fixing bridges," Haley said. "Our Local Aid for Centers program is specifically designed to help local planning initiatives come to fruition."

The Local Aid for Centers program makes funding available for non-traditional transportation improvements to municipalities that formally participate in the implementation of the State Development and Redevelopment Plan.
