NJDOT suspends construction for
Memorial Day weekend, Route 55/47
corridor targeted for traffic mitigation initiatives

Transportation Commissioner John J. Haley, Jr. today announced that NJDOT will suspend construction activities that impact traffic for the Holiday weekend.

"We will do our part by ensuring motorists can get to their destinations safely and with minimal disruption," the Commissioner said. "Beginning at noon this Friday, May 23rd, all construction work that impact lanes will be suspended through the morning rush hour on Tuesday, May 27th. We will only allow lane closures for emergency work.

The DOT will also be extending the hours of operation for our Emergency Service Patrols (ESP) on Friday and Monday. On Routes 80, 280 and 287, ESP will operate from 4:00 AM to 10:30 PM on Friday, and 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM on Monday. On Routes 295, 55, 42, and 76/676, the hours will be 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Friday, and 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Monday.

"We strongly encourage motorists with disabled vehicles to pull completely off the roadway and stay with their vehicle until police or ESP personnel arrive," Commissioner Haley said. "Before leaving home, drivers should inspect their vehicle for basic items like gas, water and oil, and also ensure that the spare tire is properly inflated.

"Our message for motorists this weekend is a simple one: Drive Safely. We recommend that motorists observe all posted speed limits, wear a seat belt, follow the rules of the road, and do not drink and drive."

Commissioner Haley also announced several initiatives to provide traffic mitigation in the Route 55/47 corridor. Those initiatives are:

  • Variable Message Signs on Route 42 advising motorists to use the Atlantic City Expressway if congestion builds on Route 55.
  • Improved signal timing at Route 47 and Garden State Parkway Interchange 109 in Cape May County.
  • Three new traffic signals on Route 147 and a new signal at Route 47 and County Route 657 in Dennis Township.

"Routes 55 and 47 will carry thousands of motorists this weekend," the Commissioner said. "These efforts will help to reduce congestion."
