NJDOT moves to next phase
of Route 1 widening project

Commissioner John J. Haley Jr. said today that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) would move a proposed widening project of Route 1 in Middlesex County to the next phase by opening a dialogue with local officials to determine public support.

"Preliminary planning studies conducted by the NJDOT found that there is a need for increased capacity on this section of Route 1. Our next step is to work closely with South Brunswick, other officials and the public to determine the transportation needs and develop options that are mutually agreeable," Haley said. "I would like to thank Senator Inverso, Assemblyman Kramer and Assemblywoman Wright for their continuing support of this project. I know they will do everything they can to ensure this project advances."

The proposed project includes adding an additional lane on a seven-mile stretch of Route 1 in both directions from Independence Way to Finnegans Lane in South Brunswick. The NJDOT completed traffic studies earlier this year which suggest a widening is needed.

The NJDOT will begin scheduling meetings with local officials and the community to discuss their perceptions of problems in the corridor and begin to develop mutually agreeable options. Following those meetings, the department will begin more detailed studies in the fall.
