NJDOT Proposes Rules to Allow
for Charitable Solicitations Along State Roads

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is proposing regulations to permit charitable organizations to solicit motorists along state roads. Governor Whitman signed legislation in April 1997 that permits the sale of merchandise or tickets, and the solicitation of contributions by legitimate charitable organizations along state roadways. Previously, such solicitation was prohibited.

The proposed new regulations are scheduled to be published in the New Jersey Register today. The public has until March 4, 1998 to comment on this proposal.

Governor Whitman and Commissioner Haley urge any organization that obtains a permit to solicit on the roads to make absolutely certain that their members understand and follow the proscribed safety measures in the regulations and permit.

Comments should be directed in writing to Renee Rapciewicz, Deputy Administrative Practice Officer, NJDOT, 1035 Parkway Avenue, CN 600, Trenton, New Jersey, 08625-0600; Fax (609) 530-3841.
