Inspection Extensions to be Offered to Motorists

Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein today announced that beginning tomorrow (December 31), Division of Motor Vehicles personnel will be present at inspection stations to offer motorists extensions on their inspections when lines become too long.

The extension offer will initially cover eight inspection facilities in northern and central New Jersey beginning tomorrow. It will be expanded to all inspection stations in the state by Monday, January 3, 2000.

Commissioner Weinstein said, "Motorists need relief from the long inspection lines and this is one way to provide some relief. Personnel at inspection facilities will be authorized to offer motorists up to a 45-day extension on their inspection when lines exceed a reasonable time period."

The Department will continue to work with Parsons Infrastructure, the state contractor responsible for performing auto inspections, on reducing wait times for New Jersey motorists.

The extensions will not apply to facilities which now perform inspections by appointment only.
