Commissioner Fox presents
check for Ivy Avenue bridge project

Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox today presented a check for $750,000 to Haworth Mayor John DiRienzo for the construction of a new bridge adjacent to the Ivy Avenue bridge. The check presentation took place next to the Ivy Avenue bridge in Haworth.

“With today’s traffic needs and emergency service needs, a bridge constructed in 1885 just doesn’t do the job,” Commissioner Fox said. “By partnering with the Borough of Haworth, we’re able to make the most of our limited resources by delivering a project that construct a new bridge for vehicles and preserve the old one for pedestrians.”

The Ivy Avenue bridge is a structurally-deficient timber bridge owned by the Borough of Haworth. The 10 foot wide bridge stretches 106 feet across the CSX rail line that bisects Haworth.

The project will construct a new bridge adjacent to the existing one, which will then be used solely for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project is estimated to cost $1.36 million to build.

“The Transportation Trust Fund returns approximately $160 million to communities each year through DOT’s Local Aid program,” Commissioner Fox said. “Projects like this one contribute to our high quality of life here in New Jersey and are a good example of how important the Transportation Trust Fund is to our transportation system at every level.”
