NJDOT announces temporary lane closure on Route 1
(West
Windsor) The New Jersey Department of Transportation
(NJDOT) announced that starting on Wednesday, June 22 nd at 10
p.m., the left lane of Route 1 northbound from Quaker Bridge Road
to Nassau Park Boulevard will be closed for the installation of
the permanent center median barrier. The left lane will
reopen on approximately July 15 th . The installation is a part
of the highly successful Route 1 Nassau Park Boulevard project.
Additionally,
the center lane of Route 1 will be briefly closed from Wednesday,
June 22 nd at 10 p.m. until Thursday, June 23 rd at 6 a.m.
From that point, three lanes of traffic will remain open with
the center and right lane remaining open as well as a through
lane on the service road until the left lane is reopened on approximately
July 15 th .
The
Route 1 Nassau Park Boulevard Project significantly improved traffic
flow and reduced congestion on Route 1 by making improvements
to the intersections of Route 1 & I-95, Route 1 & Quaker
Bridge Road, and, mostly importantly, by removing the traffic
signal and jug handle at the intersection of Route 1 & Nassau
Park Boulevard. The $3.4 million project began in June
2004 and was accelerated by NJDOT Commissioner Jack Lettiere last
year so the majority of the work was competed by Thanksgiving
2004. Roughly 70,000 cars travel that stretch of Route
1 everyday.
The
permanent center median barrier will be the tapered concrete barrier
that is used in many narrow highway medians (commonly called "Jersey
Barrier"), to prevent vehicle crossovers into oncoming traffic.
The only remaining major work after the installation
of the barrier will be the final paving of Route 1 and the connecting
ramps. The paving work will happen later this summer. (See
