NJDOT announces new traffic pattern on Route 139

Holland Tunnel Approaches rehabilitation project progresses

(Trenton)- New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the start of a major construction stage on the Route 139 Holland Tunnel Approaches rehabilitation project. Starting January 5, 2007, the existing traffic patterns on the westbound 14th Street viaduct will change in order for construction crews to safely access roadway lanes.

“Safety is of the utmost importance in the Route 139 Holland Tunnel Approaches project and all of NJDOT’s highway construction projects,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “The upcoming traffic pattern changes will allow both motorists and construction crews to safely navigate through the work area as the project progresses.”

The traffic pattern change will enable NJDOT to reconstruct the two center lanes on the westbound 14th St. viaduct. Crews will strip the roadway, construct a new concrete deck, repair structural steel and install steel beams beneath the viaducts to ensure structural integrity. The work zone begins 150 feet past the Jersey Avenue entrance to the viaduct and ends where the lower roadway splits from the upper roadway. Construction barriers will be placed on both sides of the center lanes to prevent motorists from entering the work zone.

Travel lane access on the westbound 14th St. viaduct will be as follows:

• Vehicles in the two left lanes will be permitted to travel to the covered roadway only.
• Vehicles in the far right lane will be permitted to travel to the New Jersey Turnpike exit ramp only. Wide load trucks will not be permitted.
• Vehicles in the second right lane will be permitted to travel to the New Jersey Turnpike exit ramp and the local exit to the upper roadway only.

NJDOT will provide roadway information on variable messaging signs at north- and southbound Jersey Avenue in Jersey City and on 14th Street prior to the viaduct entrance. Truck traffic carrying wide loads should also note that access restrictions due to lane width will be in effect at this time.

The Route 139 Approaches to the Holland Tunnel Project is a federally-funded, $225 million project that will rehabilitate and reconstruct the existing, structurally deficient 12th and 14th Street viaducts. Regional stakeholders including the City of Jersey City, New York City, Hudson County, New Jersey Transit, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have closely worked with the NJDOT to ensure the successful execution of this project.

NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, weekly construction schedule updates and real time traffic cameras at https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/. Commuter information is available at www.trips123.com as well as on radio traffic reports. A bilingual Community Liaison is onsite to answer concerns and provide information to community groups or individuals upon request. Interested parties should call 1-877-NJROADS.
