NJDOT announces upcoming lane shifts
on Route 35 Manasquan River bridge

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that temporary lane shifts will take effect this Monday January 15, 2007 to allow for the rehabilitation of the Route 35 Manasquan River bridge between Brielle Borough, Monmouth County and Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean County.

This $32.3 million bridge rehabilitation project consists of the replacement of the existing bridge deck and movable span as well as the barrier and warning gates. NJDOT will extend the ‘Jersey barrier’ on the Brielle side of the bridge to provide for a safer and more consistent section of roadway. New curbs, sidewalks, bicycle-compatible lanes and landscaping treatments will be provided throughout the entire project. The bulkhead in Brielle will also be upgraded.

The Higgins Avenue ramp into Brielle will be closed during construction and additional signage will be provided to guide motorists. NJDOT is working closely with local emergency responders including police and fire officials as well as the State Marine Police Bureau personnel to ensure traffic flow and allow for emergency response.

The first stage of construction will be done in the center third of the bridge effective January 15, 2007. The existing lanes will be shifted to the outer thirds of the structure to allow for the construction of the platforms, barriers, and gates, which must be operational by March 1, 2007.

Traffic information will be made available to the public through five variable message signs (VMS) to alert motorists of pending construction activities. Two signs are dedicated to the Route 35 bridge, one is dedicated to the intersection of Route 35 and Route 88, one is dedicated to the Route 34 traffic at the intersection of Route 35, Route 34 and Route 70, and one is dedicated to the Route 70 traffic at the intersection of Route 35, Route 34 and Route 70.

Real time traffic information is available at www.njcommuter.com. Motorists are encouraged to check this site often for updates.
