NJDOT to resurface I-95 in Mercer County

(Trenton) –Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on March 12 will begin resurfacing Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in the townships of Ewing, Hopewell and Lawrence in Mercer County.

“This resurfacing project will improve Route 95 in Mercer County by eliminating existing potholes and cracks and providing a safer and smoother roadway,” noted Commissioner Kolluri. “Performing construction at night allows NJDOT to deliver a brand-new roadway surface without impacting traffic.”

The $19 million project will resurface all travel lanes and shoulders of I-95 from milepost 0.2 to milepost 2.3 and from milepost 3.35 to the Route 1 interchange at milepost 8.77. NJDOT also will resurface the entrance and exit ramps at each interchange on Interstate 95, excluding the reconstructed Interchange 3 (Scotch Road). The newly resurfaced roadway will provide a safer driving surface than the existing roadway, which is deteriorated, and will extend its lifespan by 15-20 years.

Construction will take place from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in order to mitigate traffic impacts on Interstate 95. The ramp repaving work will require periodic nightly closures of these ramps. NJDOT will provide advance notice and detour routes prior to each ramp closure. The resurfacing project is scheduled to be completed by mid-November, 2007.

NJDOT is working with the State Police to maintain safe conditions for workers and motorists in the construction zone. NJDOT will install two Variable Message Signs (VMS) for the duration of mainline work, on I-95 northbound and southbound, prior to the start of work on the project to inform motorists of any change in traffic patterns during nighttime operations. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.njcommuter.com
