NJDOT announces start of
Route 295 rehabilitation in Gloucester County

Project will necessitate traffic pattern changes

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the start of NJDOT’s $ 77 million resurfacing and pavement reconstruction on Route 295 from Exit 14 (Repaupo Road) to Exit 24 (Route 45) in the townships of Logan, Greenwich, East Greenwich, West Deptford and the Borough of Paulsboro in Gloucester County.

NJDOT is scheduled to begin the rehabilitation of Route 295 on June 1, 2007 and complete construction in summer 2009. The existing roadway is seriously deteriorated and in need of a complete rehabilitation.

“NJDOT’s Route 295 Rehabilitation project will make significant safety and operational improvements,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “The $77 million effort in Gloucester County reflects NJDOT’s statewide investment in providing safer, smoother and longer lasting driving surfaces.”

NJDOT will reduce construction time by approximately eight months and increase the life of the pavement by 25 years by paving all of the roadway’s lanes simultaneously. This paving method eliminates the formation of longitudinal cracks between lanes that commonly result from paving each lane individually.

The project will be constructed in four segments to minimize impacts to local businesses and residents and to reduce the number of ramp closures at one time. Between June and November 2007, construction will take place at the northern and southern limits of the project in Logan, East Greenwich and Greenwich Townships and in West Deptford Township between Jessup Road and Route 45.

NJDOT installed a real-time work zone travel system along the project route. This system monitors traffic in the work zone and relays travel time data to Variable Message Signs that alert motorists of the projected time to travel from their current location through the construction zone. Ten Variable Message Signs along Route 295 and local roadways will alert motorists of upcoming construction activities and traffic pattern changes.

Construction of the 2.3 miles at the southern end of the project in Logan, East Greenwich and Greenwich Townships, will require the following traffic pattern changes:

  • Beginning on Friday, June 1, NJDOT will close the right lane on Route 295 northbound and southbound. This will enable crews to install drainage and real time work zone travel system equipment and to mill and pave the outside roadway shoulders. The right lanes will reopen in early July.
  • In early July, NJDOT will close the left lane on Route 295 northbound and southbound. This will enable crews to install drainage and real time work zone travel system equipment and to mill and pave the inside roadway shoulders. The left lanes will remain closed through November 2007.
  • From August through September, NJDOT enact a full closure of the northbound side of the roadway and reconfigure the southbound side of Route 295 to accommodate two travel lanes in each direction. This will be accomplished by converting the right southbound shoulder into a travel lane.
  • From October through November, NJDOT will close the southbound side of the roadway and reconfigure the newly rehabilitated northbound side of Route 295 to accommodate two travel lanes in each direction. This will be accomplished by converting the right northbound shoulder into a travel lane.
  • While traffic from the closed roadway during Segment 1 is detoured onto the adjacent roadway, the detoured roadway will not be able to utilize any of the exits or entrances within the work zone. However, all exits are open to the roadway in the direction open to traffic within the segment.

Construction of the Northern segment of the project, located between Jessup Road and Route 45 in West Deptford Township, will require the following traffic pattern changes:

  • Beginning in June, the right lane on Route 295 northbound and southbound will be closed to traffic from milepost 21 to 24.6. The left and center lane will be maintained in both directions during daytime hours. Night-time work will require periodic single lane closures.
  • From July through November, the right lane on route 295 northbound and southbound will reopen and the left and center lanes will be closed. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained by converting the right lane and shoulder into travel lanes.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website, https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/, for project updates.
