NJDOT announces upcoming traffic shift on Route I-280 Stickel Bridge

Rehabilitation project in Harrison progresses

(Trenton)— New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced an upcoming traffic shift of the eastbound lanes over the Route 280 Stickel Bridge, which connects Newark and Harrison over the Passaic River.

Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 13, NJDOT will shift the eastbound travel lanes from the center of the bridge to the newly rehabilitated right lanes. The center of the bridge will then be closed to traffic in order to start construction on that portion of the bridge. There will be no loss of travel lanes due to this traffic shift. This lane shift will remain in effect until October 1, 2007.

All work is weather-dependent, and should inclement weather occur, the lane shifts will be rescheduled.

NJDOT’s $32 million rehabilitation project, which began in June 2006, will improve the structure and operation of the movable Stickel Bridge. NJDOT is replacing the bridge decks and rehabilitating the bridge superstructure to help stabilize the severely deteriorated span, extending its lifespan by 25 years. The project is scheduled to be completed in spring 2008.

NJDOT encourages motorists to drive carefully to protect themselves and workers in the construction zone. Variable Message Signs will be in place on major roads such as the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Interstate I-80 and other regional corridors to inform motorists of the changes in traffic pattern. Real time traffic information is available at https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/

NJDOT’s I-280 Stickel Bridge rehabilitation website, http://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/I280/, lists the specific construction work currently taking place on the I-280 Stickel Bridge project.
