NJDOT to improve shoulders on
I-78 in Essex and Union counties

(Trenton) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that starting August 20, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will reconstruct the shoulders of the I-78 local and express lanes in Newark and Irvington in Essex County and Union and Hillside in Union County.

NJDOT will repair the pavement of the eastbound express and local lane shoulders and the westbound local lane shoulders on 5.5 miles of I-78, from the Garden State Parkway to Routes 1 & 9 in Newark. The westbound express shoulders were repaired recently and thus require minimal repair.

NJDOT will extend the pavement lifespan by ten years by removing and replacing six inches of joints and pavement with hot-mix asphalt. NJDOT also will improve roadway drainage by cleaning the pipes and structures.

Construction work will entail temporary single-lane closures at off-peak hours, mainly overnight. Construction is scheduled to be completed in November 2007.

NJDOT also is reconstructing two miles of I-78 east of this shoulder reconstruction project in Union Township from Springfield Avenue to Walker Avenue.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully to protect themselves and workers in the construction zone. NJDOT has placed Variable Message Signs on I-78 to inform motorists of the changes in traffic pattern. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.njcommuter.com.
