NJDOT resurfaces Route 95 in
Mercer County with eco-friendly, quiet pavement

(Trenton) - Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) paved Route 95 from Scotch Road in Ewing to Route 1 in Lawrence with an asphalt mix that contains recycled tires and is designed to reduce road noise.

NJDOTs use of this recycled tire asphalt mix reflects the Departments commitment to maintain a safe and environmentally-friendly roadway network, said Commissioner Kolluri. NJDOT will continue to improve roads in a manner that minimally impacts local communities and their quality of life.

The rubber asphalt mix used on Route 95 is comprised of recycled tires. Approximately 80,000 tires were reused to create the paving mix, thus eliminating harmful waste from the environment.

Tests have shown that rubber asphalt provides excellent durability, skid resistance, ride quality and improved visibility. In addition, this product costs less to maintain than traditional pavement and reduces highway noise for communities neighboring the roadway. NJDOT will closely monitor the pavements performance to ensure that it meets Department standards.

The quiet pavement installation is part of a $19 million resurfacing project scheduled for completion in November. This project includes the resurfacing of Route 95 north- and southbound from milepost 0.2 to milepost 2.3 and from milepost 3.35 to the Route 1 interchange at milepost 8.77. The newly resurfaced roadway will provide a safer driving surface than the existing roadway and will extend the roadways lifespan by 15-20 years.
