NJDOT to open Route 78
eastbound local roadway in Union

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the rehabilitated eastbound local lanes of I-78 in Union Township will reopen to traffic by Monday morning, October 8.

“The reconstruction of the Route 78 local lanes will enable drivers to more safely and efficiently travel on one of the state’s busiest roadways,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “I want to thank motorists for their patience throughout this construction project and ensure the public that we will work to reopen the westbound local lanes as soon as possible.”

The I-78 westbound local lanes will be reconstructed and reopened to traffic by the end of October 2007.

NJDOT’s $42 million pavement reconstruction on Route 78 in Union Township, Union County will make significant safety and operational improvements, resulting in a safer and smoother roadway. NJDOT saved $11 million, reduced construction time by one year and increased the life expectancy of the pavement by ten years by reconstructing the express lanes simultaneously. This paving method eliminates the formation of longitudinal cracks between lanes that commonly result from paving each roadway lane individually.

Motorists are encouraged to obey the posted 50 miles-per-hour speed limit and drive carefully to protect themselves and workers in the construction zone.

NJDOT installed 15 Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) along I-78, Route 24, the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway and launched an aggressive advertising, local outreach and media campaign to alert motorists of changes to Route 78 traffic patterns. Real-time traffic delays will be reported via these variable message signs, highway advisory radio stations, traffic media services and https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/.
