RELEASE: February 20, 2008

NJDOT begins Route 47 intersection improvements at two locations in Dennis Township

(Trenton)- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will reconstruct the intersections of Route 47 with Petersburg Road (County Route 610) and Tyler Road (County Route 611) in Dennis Township, Cape May County, starting Tuesday, February 26, 2008.

“This $1.2 million project will improve safety on this vital shore route and increase the efficiency of the roadway,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “These intersection improvements represent a tangible increase in safety for the motorists who travel Route 47 on a daily basis, as well as summer tourists on their way to the Cape May County shore."

This project includes both safety and operational improvements. NJDOT will reduce congestion by adding new left-turn lanes from all roadway approaches at the intersections of Route 47 and Petersburg Road and Route 47 and Tyler Road. In addition, NJDOT will provide a left-turn lane signal at Petersburg Road for motorists turning onto Route 47 southbound. Traffic cameras will be installed at each intersection to enable NJDOT to monitor congestion.

In order to improve safety, NJDOT will install new traffic signals and lighting at each intersection. NJDOT will reinforce the existing guide rails on Route 47 and will resurface Route 46, Tyler Road and Petersburg Road at both intersections.

All work is weather permitting. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2008.

Two lanes of Route 47 will remain open in both directions throughout construction. Single lane closures may be necessary. Motorists will be notified of these closures in advance.

Variable message signs will be installed at the site to inform motorists of pending construction and detours. Real time traffic information is available to motorists at https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/.
