NJDOT to improve intersection
of Route 206 and Main Street in Chester

(Trenton) - Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on May 12 will start a project to improve the Route 206 and Main Street (CR-513) intersection in Chester Borough and Chester Township, Morris County.

“Reconstructing this intersection will provide safer driving conditions for residents and commuters on this important stretch of Route 206 in Morris County,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine.

On Monday, June 1, NJDOT will reduce and shift the travel lanes on Route 206 to the west between the Colby Farm Road intersection and just south of the Melville Place intersection, in order to begin roadway excavation, and drainage, sidewalk and curb construction.

NJDOT will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction on Route 206, with temporary single-lane closures allowed Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following day. Single-lane closures may also take place on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday morning, Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday morning, and Sunday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday morning.

The $9.5 million project will provide new left turn lanes on Route 206 at the approaches to Main Street in Chester Borough. Also, a two-way left turn lane will be constructed along the center of Route 206 from the Main Street intersection to just south of the Chester Borough/Chester Township border. This center lane will allow for left turns into the adjacent businesses along Route 206. Construction is scheduled for completion in August 2010.

NJDOT has installed variable message signs on Route 206 to inform motorists of the closure. Real time travel and construction information is available at www.511nj.org.
