Route 1 Business and Whitehead Road
intersection improvements project advances in Lawrence
Traffic shift required for intersection improvements
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the removal of a traffic signal and the establishment of a roundabout with center medians at the Route 1 Business and Whitehead Road intersection on Friday night, as the Route 1 Business from Brunswick Circle to Lake Drive improvements project advances in Lawrence, Mercer County.
Beginning at 5 p.m. today, Friday, June 9, until 12 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s contractor Green Construction, Inc., is scheduled to stripe the roadway and place barrels to construct center medians and a roundabout at the intersection of Route 1 Business and Whitehead Road. Temporary lane closures may be required at the intersection to remove the temporary traffic signal. The new traffic shift is expected to remain in place until the completion of the permanent center medians and roundabout, which is expected to be completed by winter 2018. Any lane closures will be coordinated with local police.
The $6.6 million federally-funded Route 1 Business from Brunswick Circle to Lake Drive improvements project began in March 2016, and is expected to be completed in late 2018. The project addresses improvements in the area by creating a safer more pedestrian friendly intersection. A new three-leg, two lane roundabout also will provide a transition between the higher speed segment of Route 1 Business to the north of Whitehead Road, and the lower speed traffic calmed segment of Route 1 Business to the south of Whitehead Road.
Additional intersection improvements include:
- Two 11-foot travel lanes in each direction, an 8-foot wide on-street parking lane, a shoulder on the northbound side
- A 4-foot wide southbound shoulder
- A 14 ½ foot wide grass center median with 1-foot wide shoulders along the center median
- Curb improvements at the intersection approaches
Variable message signs and lane closure signs will be utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the intersection improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
