Route 1 & 9 express lanes to be closed this weekend
Traffic in both directions to be shifted to local lanes during construction
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a closure of the Route 1 & 9 express lanes in Newark approaching the Pulaski Skyway as the rehabilitation of the historic 85-year-old bridge advances.
Beginning 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, March 16 until 5 a.m. Monday, March 19, NJDOT’s contractor, Union Paving, is scheduled to shift Route 1 & 9 express traffic onto the local lanes using existing crossover ramps in Newark. The closure effects both the northbound and southbound express lanes north of the I-78 interchange and just south of Foundry Street, and is necessary for the installation of drainage pipe across the express lanes. The lane shifts will not effect the Skyway.
This work is part of the $80.8 million Pulaski Skyway Contract 7, which began this winter to rehabilitate the Route 1 & 9 southbound Newark exit ramp and other structural elements around the piers on the north and south ends of the Pulaski Skyway. Other project improvements include lighting upgrades, steel repair, and the installation of a guiderail along the Newark ramp. Contract 7 is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2019.
NJDOT created a project-specific website - www.pulaskiskyway.com - which contains a wealth of information about the Skyway and the project, and will be updated with relevant new information as work progresses. The Department is carefully coordinating the Pulaski Skyway project with other regional transportation infrastructure projects to minimize traffic congestion.
