I-295 pavement resurfacing project begins on Friday in Burlington and Mercer Counties

High Performance Thin Overlay to improve road safety and performance

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a pavement preservation project that will require temporary overnight lane closures and ramp detours on I-295 in Burlington and Mercer Counties.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 10 until 6 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt Company, is scheduled to begin temporary lane closures on I-295 between Route 130 in Bordentown, Burlington County and Independence Avenue in Hamilton, Mercer County to mill and pave a four-mile stretch of road.  I-295 southbound right lane and shoulder will be closed, as well as the northbound left lane. Two lanes will be maintained in each direction. All lanes will be fully reopened by 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

Work will continue nightly, Monday through Friday, with temporary lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day. Later in the project, several ramps will be closed and detoured. NJDOT will provide information in advance of those closures. Motorists should exercise caution while driving near the work zone.

High Performance Thin Overlay, a pavement preservation product made of recycled asphalt materials, will be applied to the existing pavement that may be cracked or fatigued, to provide a smoother, safer driving experience. The application will improve ride quality, skid resistance, and reduce noise, as well extend the lifetime of the pavement. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.

Portable and overhead variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
