Route 88 Bridge over Point Pleasant Canal overnight closures this week

Nightly detour necessary as painting project nears completion

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that the Route 88 Bridge over the Point Pleasant Canal in Point Pleasant is expected to be closed and detoured overnight this week to complete the painting project that began earlier this month.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, April 30 until 6 a.m. the next day, and continuing each night through Friday night, May 3, NJDOT’s contractor IEW Corp., will close and detour the bridge to complete painting the towers and counterweights. The full closure is necessary to lift the bridge to paint components that are not accessible while the bridge is in the down position. This work is weather dependent and if necessary, work will continue Monday through Friday nights next week. The following detour will be in place overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day:

Route 88 Eastbound detour
(April 30 – May 3, Tuesday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.)

  • Route 88 eastbound motorists will be directed to turn right on Beaver Dam Road/CR 630
  • Turn left on Bridge Avenue east and go over the Lovelandtown Bridge
  • Turn left on Bay Avenue/CR 604 to Route 88

Route 88 Westbound detour
(April 30 – May 3, Tuesday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.)

  • Route 88 westbound motorists will be directed to turn left on Bay Avenue/CR 604
  • Turn right on Bridge Avenue west over the Lovelandtown Bridge
  • Turn right on Beaver Dam Road/CR 630 to Route 88 westbound

Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
