Route 33 pavement preservation project begins in Manalapan and Freehold, Monmouth County

Temporary daytime traffic shifts required to begin shoulder rehabilitation

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a pavement preservation project along more than four miles of Route 33 in both directions between CR 527/Millhurst Road/Sweetmans Lane, Manalapan and Howell Road, Freehold in Monmouth County.

Beginning at 8 p.m., Monday, July 8, until 6 a.m. the next morning, and continuing Monday through Friday for approximately two months, NJDOT’s contractor, Black Rock Enterprises, LLC, is scheduled to close the right lane and shoulder on Route 33 eastbound, beginning just east of CR 527/Millhurst Road/Sweetmans Lane in Manalapan. The project will include curb work, and storm water grate and inlet upgrades and replacements. All lanes will be restored each afternoon.  At least one lane of travel and access to all businesses will be maintained at all times during the project.

Temporary overnight lane closures and traffic shifts will be required upon completion of the shoulder work to begin milling and paving in both directions. NJDOT will provide advance notice of any lane closures.

The $7.2 million federally-funded Route 33 pavement preservation project will extend the pavement life, improve safety and enhance ride quality for motorists. All ramps within the project limits will be resurfaced. Substandard inlets and curbs will be upgraded or replaced; segments of the storm water drainage grating system will be upgraded; and rumble strips will be applied.  The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer in 2020.

Variable message signs are being used throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the pavement preservation project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
