Route 40 eastbound/Route 45 northbound to be closed and detoured as the intersection improvement project advances in Woodstown

Route 40 westbound and Route 45 southbound to remain open

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure and detour of Route 40 eastbound and Route 45 northbound in Woodstown as the intersection improvement project advances in Woodstown, Salem County.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, August 5 until 3:30 p.m., and continuing daily, Monday through Friday, NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., will close and detour Route 40 eastbound at Bailey Street and North Main Street/Route 45 northbound from Route 40 through East Grant Street for a full box reconstruction of the roadway. Work will begin on North Main Street/Route 45 northbound between Route 40 and East Grant Street. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses during construction, however there may be times when driveway access will be limited between East Grant Street and the intersection of Marlton Road and North Main.

Upon completion of the reconstruction of North Main Street/Route 45 northbound, construction will move to Route 40 eastbound for a full box reconstruction of the roadway between Green Street and South Main Street/Route 45. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses during construction, however there may be times when driveway access will be limited between Green Street and South Main. NJDOT will notify residents and businesses before work takes place.

Route 40 westbound traffic will not be affected. This stage is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. The following detours will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week until this stage is complete:

Route 40 eastbound detour
• Motorists wishing to take Route 40 eastbound through downtown will be directed to continue straight onto Bailey Avenue/CR 616
• Turn right onto South Main/CR 672
• Bear left at the fork onto Woodstown-Daretown Road/CR 615
• Turn left onto Commissioner Pike/CR 581 and follow back to Route 40

Route 45 northbound detour
• Motorists on Route 45 northbound wishing to take Route 40 eastbound will be directed to turn left onto Bailey Avenue/Route 40. Motorists on Bailey Street/CR616 wishing to take Route 40 eastbound will be directed to continue straight on Bailey street
• Turn right on Kings Highway/CR 620
• Turn right on Marlton Road/CR 636 to North Main Street

The $2.25 million federally-funded project will fully reconstruct Route 40 from Green Street to W. Wilson Avenue/Grant Street; resurface Route 45/N. Main Street from Bowen Avenue to the intersection with Route 40, and replace the traffic signal at the intersection of Route 40 and Route 45. In addition, there will be improvements to make curbs and sidewalks ADA compliant. The project has been designed in stages to minimize the effect on traffic. Construction is expected to be completed this fall. NJDOT will provide advanced notice before any lane closures or shifts as the project advances.

Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
