Old Newark Pompton Turnpike/CR 683 lane closures required on Bridge over Route 202/Route 23 as bridge deck replacement project begins in Wayne

One lane will remain open in both directions during next stage of construction


(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced lane closures on Old Newark Pompton Turnpike/CR 683 in both directions as the bridge over Route 202/ Route 23 replacement project begins in Wayne, Passaic County.

Beginning today, Friday, September 13, and continuing for approximately one month, NJDOT’s contractor, Ritacco Construction, Inc., will close one lane in each direction on the Old Newark Pompton Turnpike/CR 683 Bridge over Route 202/Route 23. Traffic will use will use the outer lanes, which will create a center work zone to allow removal of the center median and guardrail upgrades. During construction, yield signs in the area will be converted to stop signs. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times during the project.

The $6.4 million federally-funded Old Newark Pompton Turnpike/CR 683 Bridge over Route 202/Route 23 project will replace the bridge deck and make steel repairs. The project will advance in stages with one side of the bridge being demolished and constructed at a time with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction or the other side.

The Old Newark Pompton Turnpike/CR 683 Bridge over Route 202/Route 23 project will increase the vertical under clearance of the bridge by 6 inches, and create two 12-foot lanes in each direction and create with a three-foot shoulder on both sides. In addition, the project will create a four-foot wide concrete island, as well as a five-foot sidewalk on both sides of the roadway.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
