Route 18/I-287 Connection

Project description:
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will upgrade access via Hoes Lane from Interstate 287 and Route 18 to the Busch Campus of Rutgers University, a major engineering and academic research center in Piscataway. Planned upgrades for Hoes Lane that will become part of Route 18 are four lanes, pavement replacement, signal replacement and various pedestrian safety improvements. This includes sidewalks, multi-use paths and two new pedestrian bridges.

The Route 18/I-287 Connection's role in the Liberty Corridor is to improve access to the Rutgers University campuses located in New Brunswick and Piscataway, and to several growing high technology and research firms, such as Telecordia and Johnson & Johnson.

Related to economic development, the Route 18/I-287 Connection facilitates the planned expansion of the Telecordia campus and Hapag-Lloyd's North American headquarters. Hapag-Lloyd is a leading international cargo container shipping line.

An innovative aspect of the Route 18/I-287 Corridor is that it improves access to a leading academic research institution and several growing high technology and research firms.

Total project cost:
$77.295 million

Funding partnerships:
The Liberty Corridor will provide $12 million in funding; NJDOT's Transportation Trust Fund will provide $55.9 million.
