COVID-19 RELATED Information

Beginning on March 18th and continuing at least through March 31st, all walk-in services at Division of Taxation regional and Trenton offices will be closed to the public as a precaution to safeguard public health. We anticipate reopening on April 1st.

Our Call center and email service is operating with reduced staff on a limited schedule Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed Fridays. You may experience significant wait times or delays in response to telephone inquiries, emails or general correspondence.

You can file for free at New Jersey Online Income Tax Filing System, download Income Tax forms or make payments from this website.

Information About Your Three-Letter Refund Code

Below are three-letter codes. The Division of Taxation uses these codes in notices asking for more information about refunds in progress. If you received a notice, check the return address for a code. Select that code below, and you will see a list of what the Division needs:

  • If you are claiming Partnership Withholdings, a copy of all your NJK-1 statements;
  • If you are claiming Military Spouse status, a copy of Form NJ-165 , which was filed with your employer;
  • If you were a Pennsylvania resident and had New Jersey taxes withheld in error, submit a signed statement of New Jersey Non-Residency .

    • Your spouse/civil union partner (if any);
    • Dependent children (if any).
  • Birth certificates (that show the parents’ names) for your dependent children (if any). If you are not listed on the birth certificate, include documentation showing your relationship to the child or dependent;
  • Your IRS Tax Account Transcript or IRS Record of Account. You can order these online at the IRS website or call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946;
  • Your Business or Self-Employment Records
  • All W-2s and/or 1099s, if any;
  • A list of the addresses where you lived in the tax year. Include the dates that you lived at each location. If you are a member of the Armed Forces stationed outside of New Jersey, include your most recent assignment orders (NER).

  • Bring copies of your documents to the nearest Regional Information Center;
